Got a set of 4 steel rims for $100 bucks from the wrecker, they aren't all that nice but will take the beating the truck gets off roadin' in the summer.

Spending today cleaning them up, one rim took 4 SOS pads. Going to paint (possibly Plastidip) them black and get some center caps to cover the hub. Any Oppo's have advice on painting wheels? Just primer, paint, and then clear? Any experience with Plastidip?

I have seen some people who have it peel off pretty easily. Will have to do more research into it.

My suggestion is either do buttloads of layers. Or just lay down some primer and paint them black.

Do people use Plastidip because it peels off?

I think it really depends on how it's being cleaned and how it's applied.

The truck gets power washed pretty regularly and I don't really want to be respraying it after every trip to the wash.

Yeah, I think since the wheels weren't a super expensive purchase, that you should probably just paint them.

"one rim took 4 SOS pads"

Could've saved yourself some time & elbow grease and used wheel cleaner. Don't bother with a pansy "safe for all wheels" one, either. Grab something with acid in it and . Hell, even CLR would work.

I like the idea of Plastidipping them for the more durable/rubberish finish but the fact that it can peel off kind of scares me away too.

Yeah, constantly having to refinish them would be rather annoying. You could go with a matte finish paint though.

Used a bit of CLR with the SOS pads actually, it mostly took a lot of scrubbing from a clump of grease that I didn't see until I had smeared it all over the inside of the rim. I have to do the cleaning in the kitchen sink so acids probably aren't the best.

Thinking of that or seeing how much powder coat or spray-in bedliner would cost on them.

Yeah, Plasti Dip or Diy would be the most cost effective.

For sure, will likely paint but will get a can of Plastidip just to try it out. Thanks for the help!
